History
Ruth Hanzlik, creator and sculptor of the FREDDIE, with hand-sculpted wax model

In 1992, the FREDDIE competition management decided to search for a sculptor who could create a unique and distinguished award. The design submitted by Ruth Hanzlik fulfilled our ideal and captured the spirit of the competition. Hanzlik, an artist with an international reputation for sculptures of the human form, was commissioned, and the FREDDIE as you know it today came to life.

The FREDDIE has been created at the same foundry, Mc3 Inc., since 1992. The foundry uses the lost wax process, in which a wax model of the artwork is dipped in a ceramic material to form a shell strong enough to hold the molten bronze. When the shell has hardened, the wax model is melted with steam and the wax is reused. The shell, or mold, is "fired" to increase its strength before it is filled with molten bronze. Once the metal has cooled, the ceramic shell is chipped off to reveal the bronze casting, which is then sandblasted and torched to add a patina. Each FREDDIE is a handcrafted work of art, thanks to the creative design of our sculptor and the artistry of the foundry.

We are very proud that FREDDIE is displayed in many countries and across America, acknowledging the greatest of health and medical productions and their creators.
